New-to-Medicare Shopper Attitudes: 2023 Healthcare Marketing Survey
Whether opting into Medicare upon being first eligible at the age of 65 or waiting a few years to receive full social security benefits, all have to learn what Medicare is and how it works when starting the enrollment process. Since Medicare is more complex than commercial insurance, insurers have an opportunity to improve the education process for the new-to-Medicare consumers.
As part of our ongoing series of healthcare consumer surveys, Media Logic’s Consumer In Sight research team surveyed seniors aged 63-68 who were in the process of enrolling or had enrolled in the last 12 months. We asked questions about their experience with Medicare enrollment, coverage goals and how they educate themselves about options.
Here are some of our takeaways from the responses:
- Consumers who are new to Medicare prioritize cost and protection against unforeseen medical expenses over ensuring ongoing health.
- Even those who reported doing at least a moderate amount of work in educating themselves often remained confused about the difference in types of Medicare plans offered and the distinction between plans.
- While consumers tend to start by gathering information on their own, most ultimately find speaking with an expert to be the best way to reach a Medicare health plan decision.
- Overwhelmingly, costs and network are the top drivers of purchasing decisions.
